Located 360 km from the city of Belo Horizonte, the Serra da Canastra National Park is a large area (72,000 ha) composed mainly by "cerrados" and "campo limpo" (grasslands) on the plateaus, with riparian forest along the São Francisco River, one of the largest in Brazil. The lowlands display well-preserved areas of Atlantic rain forest. The park has many beautiful waterfalls, such as the spectacular Casca d'Anta (ca. 80 m high). Many interesting and rare species of birds can be found, as the Brazilian Merganser, Crowned Eagle, Blackish Rail, Golden-capped Parakeet, Short-eared and Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Least Nighthawk, Sickle-winged and Band-winged Nightjar, Stripe-breasted Starthroat, Brasilia Tapaculo, Campo Miner, Firewood-Gatherer, Southern Bristle-Tyrant, Sharp-tailed Tyrant, Cock-tailed Tyrant, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Helmeted Manakin, Ochre-breasted Pipit, White-rumped Tanager, Black-masked Finch, White-striped Warbler.
