This is a tour to southwestern Minas Gerais specializing in the CERRADO ecosystem. During 8 days / 7 nights we will visit 3 different locations (Serra do Cipó National Park, Serra do Caraça Reserve, Serra da Canastra National Park), seeing beautiful birds like... Brazilian Merganser, Golden-capped- Parakeet, Hyacinth Visorbearer, Crescent-chested Puffbird, Serra Antbird, Espinhaço and Brasilia Tapaculo, Cipó Canastero, Cock-tailed Tyrant, Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Helmeted Manakin, Serra do Mar Tyrant-Manakin., Yellow-billed Blue Finch, Black-throated Saltator and Pale-throated Pampa-Finch. We also will be looking for night birds like Short-eared and Rusty-barred Owl, Band-winged and Sickle-winged Nightjar. Serra do Cipó National Park The Serra da Cipó National Park lies at one end of the Serra do Espinhaço, 110km from the city of Belo Horizonte. It is predominantly highland steppe country at altitudes of around 1600m, with plants growing between rocks or in the sparse sandy soil. Many interesting and rare species of birds can be found, as the Hyacinth Visorbearer, Gray-backed Tachuri, Yellow-billed Blue Finch, Pale-throated Pampa-Finch, Cinereous Warbling-Finch and the Cipó Canastero. Serra do Caraça Reserve The 19th-century Matriz de Santo Antonio church stands guard over the Serra da Caraça. Part of the old monastery has been converted to a lodge and is open to visitors of the nature preserve. The Caraça mountain ridge is a reservation located in the southern area of the Espinhaço mountain range, in the state of Minas Gerais. Higher altitudes and fields with rocky outcrops display species endemic to this region, such as Hyacinth Visorbearer, Espinhaço Tapaculo, Gray-backed Tachuri and Pale-throated Serra-Finch. Within the forests, many Atlantic rain forest bird species can be observed, such as the Crescent-chested Puffbird, Serra Antbird, Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow and Serra do Mar Tyrant-Manakin. Serra da Canastra National Park Located 360 km from the city of Belo Horizonte, the Serra da Canastra National Park is a large area (72,000 ha) composed mainly by "cerrados" and "campo limpo" (grasslands) on the plateaus, with riparian forest along the São Francisco River, one of the largest in Brazil. The lowlands display well-preserved areas of Atlantic rain forest. The park has many beautiful waterfalls, such as the spectacular Casca d'Anta (ca. 80 m high). Many interesting and rare species of birds can be found, as the Brazilian Merganser, Crowned Eagle, Blackish Rail, Golden-capped Parakeet, Short-eared and Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Least Nighthawk, Sickle-winged and Band-winged Nightjar, Stripe-breasted Starthroat, Brasilia Tapaculo, Campo Miner, Firewood-Gatherer, Southern Bristle-Tyrant, Sharp-tailed Tyrant, Cock-tailed Tyrant, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Helmeted Manakin, Ochre-breasted Pipit, White-rumped Tanager, Black-masked Finch and White-striped Warbler. |
